It’s still not on the USCF home page. Go figure.

I’m not sure how I feel about this. Fischer gave us a lot to celebrate and then quit. It’s frustrating to think of all the beauty he would have created if he had played chess the last 35 years. Not to mention the growth in chess in the U.S. that would have occurred had he kept playing (There was quite a surge as it was, but it collapsed.)

There seems to be a lot of that in chess – the “If only he had devoted all that energy into promoting chess instead of tearing everything down.” comment seems all too common.

Whatever no criticism today. This is not the first thing I expected to read at work. What a crazy beautiful genius he was. Shitty.

    To use the chess analogy:

Bobby’s life had the strongest opening followed by a middle game with unsound attacks which left him a lone king in the end.

He did more for chess’ popularity than any other individual in this century. It’s too bad teh anti-social issues eclisped this genius in his prime. Looking at his history and his anti-social behavior, the sharp focus and linarity he had on chess… I think he had Aspirger’s syndrome that went undiagnosed.

    Sad day.

This was mentioned on ESPN before the USCF, I think.

There’s a fairly tasteless joke regarding Fischer’s pearly gates conversation that came to mind. But I don’t want to get fired like the editor of the golf magazine that had the noose on the cover.

Let’s see how long it takes for an official reprint or updated version of his 60 games book to come out. Any guesses? I guess 45 days for an aanouncement of publication.

Bobby Fischer was one of the greatest chess players ever. I find it very sad his accomplishments on the chessboard and his creative genius would forever be tarnished by his erratic behaviour off the board.

The chess world is indeed very much the poorer since he went into seclusion and forfeited his chess crown.

Thats the price for being a true genius I guess. God bless him though, he stood by his convictions even at a great price and changes the world of chess.

chessed – i dont’ know, maybe not. maybe, if he kept playing chess, he would have just hit a plateu and then evened out or maybe even started losing. perhaps the insanity was inevitable, and had he stuck with chess, he would have turned more people away with it? tough to say, so i’m just glad “we had him” while we did….

blunderprone – yeah, he just might have had aspirgers….

liquid egg product – ok, curiosity peaked….what is the tasteless joke? considering it’s bobby “those damn hooknose jews” fischer (sadly, i will always remember him for that phrase, and not “All I want to do, ever, is just play chess.”), i would assume it’s somehow antisemetic?

edias – yeah, i wondered about that book deal thing, what’s gonna happen with that? now that he is dead will they still go through with it? will they release the updated/reprinted version? someone’s gotta be running the presses as we speak…

You know, I forgot what the joke was. It had something to do with Fischer meeting Peter or Jesus and finding out they’re Jewish.
