while playing a rated game, i get a nice discovered check, take his queen, and suddenly he disconnects and the game is adjourned. maybe the guy happened to have a weird power outage, maybe he legitimately got kicked off the internet, maybe he has his settings to automatically disconnect upon losing a queen.
well, whatever the reason, he is going on the list.
thing is, i have my settings on auto forfeit upon disconnect. yet that doesn’t seem to matter. i don’t get it.
other than that….
it turns out bob barr is currently the ONLY LEGAL CANDIDATE ON THE TEXAS BALLOT. but you know for sure mccain and obama will still be on it. isn’t that somehow unfair or maybe illegal?

Dude, those people who disconnect once they know they are gonna lose are so anal, you couldn’t get a greased BB up their ass.
I’ve tried to play yahoo chess before, but it’s a joke. You will be playing some little kid running fritz multiprocessor version on a supercomputer next to him making all his moves for him. There are easy to spot… wins = 3500 losses = 3 and throw in a couple of draws here and there against the other kids running their own supercomputer.

True Story:
I have had a few people disconnect on me at the ICC. Nothing to bad. One time I was playing a game and I got disconnected and quickly got back on and looked for my opponent. He was there and we quickly resumed the game. Then a few minutes later HE got disconnected! But he came back and we finished the game!! So there is some hope out there. What is funny is that I don’t remember who won the game. I know that I was mortified when I got disconnected. I have almost gone cold turkey on the ICC. I have started playing “correspondence chess” on chess.com, which has been pretty fun so far!! Although believe it or not the 2nd game I got involved in the person didn’t make a move in 3 days and so “won” the game after 3 moves. Blechh!! But the other two games I am involved are fun!

But really, asking people to change blog vocabulary is a bit overly self-absorbed and completely out of line. Anyone can at any time claim any word is offensive. If you don’t like the words don’t use them, but telling other people what they can and can’t say in their own created world is the tip of a highly skewed and completely unwarranted iceberg of self importance.
Learn how to not allow the words to effect you.

I find it odd Elizabeth, that you would be so offended by a few words and yet have no problem posting a picture of a frog nailed to a cross on your blog. Some people might be very offended by that image regardless of your intent. It seems very hypocritical to me for you to come down on this post for it’s language when you weren’t concerned how that frog image may or may not affect the readers of your blog. You can’t really have it both ways.

One need remember that many Euros (Like Lizzy) have given up their rights to free speech. Thus, so many of them really have no clue how to handle US words and attitudes. I believe she hails from a place (Great Britain–but I could be mistaken) where many words and opinions have been criminalized. In the states, if you are offended you should show deep gratitude because it means that our freedom to speak is still alive, although currently going into a critical phase.

Words have meanings that are not determined by any single individual, as they have a cultural/historical dimension that is out of your control (this is why it is siilly when people say patently racist stuff and then justify it by saying they are not racist, like the ignorant little redneck boy using the word ‘nigger’ without knowing any of the history, an innocent kid–he’s still saying racist things, and such things have real consequences–sure he’s ignorant, but he’s still saying racist things).

I agree with BDK that this IS a subject that merits discussion. Unfortunately the thread has turned into a Beavis and Butthead skit. Although I disagree with Elizabeth coming down on Chessloser for his choice of words (see my earlier comment), it seems that some people are now just throwing obscenities around just to inflame the discussion or to throw verbal darts at Elizabeth. Either way that is very immature behavior.
Speaking one’s mind and doing so in a style that is a natural extension of one’s personality are really what blogging is all about. That is why neither Chessloser’s language or Elizabeth’s use of the frog picture offended ME in anyway. However, when a person starts to use language just to shock or to deliberately inflame someone, that is an entirely different scenario.
Blogging should be an open discussion where real ideas are discussed AND debated. Blogging should also be fun! Some of the debates might even get heated, but they should never sink down to a level where words are purposely used to hurt or further inflame someone.

For the use of words, which seems to have overtaken the discussion here instead of talk about disconnection, i find that everybody is free to use what words he or she wants on his or her blog. It’s up to the reader if he sticks with blogs with faulty language or not.

Though I have to admit she could have been a bit more circumspect in bringing it up. Flat out requesting that someone change their language, in the blogoshere, is a recipe for severe backlash, as we’ve seen demonstrated here.
Personally, I can be extremely offensive in my language, and I have learned to curtail it, to know my audience, to make sure they know me well enough to know that I am not a sexist, racist, insane right wing nut, but I play one on TV. I think nearly every other day my wife is like “Umm, that’s really offensive you know” (Like when I started making racist Chinese jokes when it was so obvious the Chinese gymnasts were cheating and getting favorable treatment, those cheating bastards!).

On the ‘noescape’ option in ICC: it only works when do two things. First, set noescape 1.
And
set formula noescape
The latter makes it so that when you have a seek out, for someone to accept that seek, they must also have noescape set to 1, and in that case disconnets are automatic forfeits. If you, however, click on someone else’s seek, and they have noescape set to 0, then it won’t matter and they can disconnect.
